How GAE Works · Step 1 of 4

The problem: abnormal blood vessels

In a knee with osteoarthritis, the inflamed joint lining (the synovium) grows extra, abnormal blood vessels. That excess blood flow feeds ongoing inflammation, which is a major driver of knee pain.

Frequently Asked Questions

What patients ask us most.

Quick answers about Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE), recovery, and what to expect on procedure day. Have a question we don’t cover? Call us — we’ll talk you through it.

What is Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE)?
GAE is a minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure used to treat chronic knee pain caused by osteoarthritis. A specialist uses imaging guidance to reduce blood flow to the small inflamed arteries in the knee, calming inflammation and easing pain — without cutting the joint.
How does GAE actually work?
A thin catheter is threaded through a small access site (typically the wrist or upper thigh) and guided to the genicular arteries that supply the lining of the knee. Tiny embolic particles are released to slow blood flow to the inflamed tissue, reducing the source of pain at its root.
Is GAE a surgery? Will I need anesthesia?
No. GAE is performed as an outpatient procedure with conscious sedation only — no general anesthesia, no incision, no hospital stay. Most patients walk out the same day.
How long is recovery?
Recovery is typically quick. Most patients return to normal daily activities within a few days. Pain relief often improves over the first several weeks as inflammation continues to subside.
What are the risks?
GAE has a strong safety record. The most common side effects are mild bruising, temporary swelling, or short-lived discomfort at the catheter site. Serious complications are rare. We review your full history and imaging before scheduling to make sure GAE is the right fit.
